Makes My Heart Ache
I saw this picture on Facebook the other day and it instantly brought tears to my eyes.
I’ve spent several years working in the mental health field and I’ve seen how verbal abuse can destroy lives.
Yeah, being a parent is tough. And yes, your kids push you and push you and push you till it feels you might snap.
In those moments of frustration, it’s important to keep your cool. A few words spoken in anger can leave a mark on your child they may never fully recover from.
Here are a few suggestions for when you feel your grip on your temper starting to slip.
- Take a deep breath. A really deep breath.
- Walk away. Sometimes you just need some space. Give yourself permission to take a time out.
- Put on some tunes. Music is a powerful tool that can shift the mood almost instantly. Crank up your favorite song and get your groove on.
- Go for a walk. No doubt about it, fresh air does a body good. So does moving.
- Ask for help. Significant other, friend, neighbor, grandparents. Sometimes you just need a break.
If you eat something rotten, your body will vomit it up. But your mind can never get rid of rotten words. They will stick with you for the rest of your life.
