Marshmallow Igloos
This is a fun, edible project to do with your kids when the weather outside is frightful. It can be educational, too.
Here is what you need:
- Paper plate
- Aluminum foil (if you want to be fancy and cover your plate so it looks pretty)
- Miniature marshmallows
- Frosting (click HERE for the recipe we used)
- Dixie paper bathroom cups (or other small paper cups)
How to Make a Marshmallow Igloo
1. Take your paper plate and turn it upside down. (Cover with aluminum foil if you choose)
2. Smear a blob of frosting toward one of the edges of the plate. Stick one paper cup in the frosting, top down.
3. With a knife, spread frosting all over the inverted cup so it is completely covered in frosting.
4. Start placing marshmallows all around the paper cup so it is completely covered.
5. To make the “door” to the igloo, dip marshmallows in frosting and stick them together until you have made a marshmallow arch.
TaDa!

As you can see, my kids weren’t patient enough to stack the marshmallows nicely, but hey, they are only 2 and 4 years old. I’m actually surprised we got the igloos covered in marshmallows and a picture taken before the kids ate their creations. We had a blast!
Fun Stuff To Teach Your Kids
While you are making these edible domiciles, here are some ideas to teach your kids as you build:
- Math- Count marshmallows. You can teach your also kids addition and subtraction (I have four marshmallows. I just ate two. How many are left?)
- Reading- Write out the word igloo for your kids (or have them write it out if they can) and ask questions like “What letter does igloo start with).
- Science- Check out this link to How Stuff Works so you can chat with your kiddos about igloos, who uses them, and how they work.
Happy, sticky iglooing!
